Ventura December ArtRides? Santacon On?

Inquiring minds want to know:

Is there a First Friday ArtRide in Ventura tonight?

Here’s my answer:

There is if you show up and ride!

Following the news in October that I was stepping back and letting others come forward to help with the ArtRides, we held a meeting to discuss whether and how the ArtRides would continue.

While the consensus was to hold fewer rides and put more energy into promoting them, a couple riders said they would ride regardless of whether anyone else did or there was any publicity. As far as I know, Daniel and Matt plan to ride.

While we discussed the challenges of having a ride on a workday so soon after people get off of work, as far as I know the start time did not change. However, the truth is, folks show up when they can. Often people meet as early as 5pm to have drinks at Aloha before the ride. Since we meet at the Artists Union, that’s usually a first stop. So we rarely leave the Promenade much before 6:30p. If we hear that a rider is on the way, we try to wait or to communicate where we’re going.

We don’t leave riders behind; please tell lots of people if you leave the ride so we’re not searching for you.

So if you want to ride, meet around 5:30p around the Artists Union Gallery, Aloha, and the Ventura Beach Promenade. The Ride will commence when riders leave sometime after 6pm.

Don’t be a darktard–take after Rudolf and light your bikes!

There does seem to be more enthusiasm for a Sunday Santacon Dec. 11. Meet 2pm at the Ventura State Beach by the Jolly Oyster. Potluck follows. Here’s a pdf of the flyer: Santacon version 2

There’s also a traditional pub crawl Santacon being organized elsewhere by others for Saturday night December 10.

Rudolf & The Red Nose Riders + Sustainable Living Bike Tour in Santa Barbara 12/1

Thursday, December 1st, Friday December 2, and Sunday December 11, to get your jollies on–while riding your bike!

Remember to light up your bike with Christmas lights as well as legal ones–you don’t want to spend your Christmas money on a ticket for riding without a headlight!

Th. Dec. 1, meet Rudolph and his red nosed riders at the Wheel House at 7:30 to merrily roll along State Street in all your seasonal glee.

Down at the pier, an epic reindeer bike sumo battle will determine who will guide Santa’s sleigh this year. Afterward head to Red’s bar and tapas for a gay ol’ time and a festive assortment of beverages.

Come down to the Wheelhouse early to support the Sustainable Living Bike Tour. Meet the riders and watch a slideshow documenting their epic ride so far from San Francisco.

Then Friday, Dec. 2, San Buenaventura ArtRiders will meet in holiday attire at 530pm for a 6pm ride around town to visit studios and galleries open for First Friday.

Sunday Dec. 11, weather permitting, the San Buenaventura ArtRiders will do a Santacon on bikes.

Happy Holidays! And remember–don’t be a darktard– light your bike!!

Dia De Los Muertos ArtRide 11/4/11

This Friday Nov. 4, the San Buenaventura ArtRiders Bicycle & Social Club invite you to celebrate Dias De Los Muertos with an ArtRide con calaveras!

5:30pm: Meet and hang out on the Ventura Beach Promenade

6pm: Photos then ride off into the sunset

So find your bones or paint some on and

LIGHT YOUR BIKE!! It’s gonna be dark out there!!

(Seriously, you can get a ticket if you don’t have headlights and tail lights and reflectors on your bike! In Santa Barbara, we have seen several people written up for $150 tickets for not having appropriate lights on their bikes!)

Santa Barbara Bike Moves Theme: Lord of the Chain Rings Th. 11/3/11

Santa Barbara Bike Moves writes:

“Cyclists of Middle Earth,

On November 3rd of the year two-thousand eleven come gather at the Hobbit Wheelhouse. From there we will embark on an epic journey through Middle Earth down to the Pier of Orodruin where we will battle the Dark Lord Sauron in a game of sumo. Will good triumph over evil?

And for those that want to strut the costume early and enjoy a little time on the water, come out for an awesome joint party with Bike Moves and Paddle Sports Halloween weekend for a noon paddle departing from the harbor to benefit “Save the Mermaids“. ”

I wish I could be there!

Gothtober Tonight: Bike Moves Ride in Santa Barbara, Bike Union Meets in Ventura

My, what big gear teeth you have!

Bring your riding hood to the WheelHouse in Santa Barbara tonight Thursday Oct 6 at 7:30 for an exciting little red ride through the downtown forests and out to the pier for a deceptive bout of bike sumo. (Note: they don’t actually get very far until about 8pm…)

Please come to “Jill’s Place” (632 Santa Barbara St.) after the ride for some quality hang out time with Grandma. Jill’s is doing Burger and Draft beer for $10 plus before the ride they will have happy hour pricing of $5 house wine, well cocktails and apps and $4 draft beer. Jill’s Place is making a gracious donation to the Spanish outreach mobile bike mechanic in hopes Sergio can make a quick recovery from his knee injury.

The fun of Bike Moves is fueled by Santa Barbara for Santa Barbara. Bike Moves is your ride, your event. Tell Bike Moves about your ideas. Show Bike Moves a new game. Bring Bike Moves food and refreshments. Tell Bike Moves you want something to change. Tell Bike Moves you want to volunteer. Send something to info@sbbikemoves.com, bring something to the ride, and talk to someone about your ideas. Wheelhouse, Bici Centro, Art from Scrap, fellow Bike Movers all are there to help.

Not in the mood for a ride? Does your bicycle need some work? The Ventura Bicycle Union’s Bike Co-op Planning Meeting and potluck is also tonight.

Bike It: Art, Poetry, Rides in Pasadena

A reading by Jen Hofer at the opening reception for “Bike It: Portraits of my Bicipandilla” photographs by Kelly Marie Martin at Armory Center for The Arts, Pasadena.

Bike It: Portraits of my Bicipandilla by Kelly Marie Martin
August 18, 2011 – October 2, 2011Friday, September 23, 2011, 5-9pm

:
Spoke(n) Art Ridethrough Pasadena, co-sponsored by Cyclists Inciting Change through Live Exchange (CICLE).Sunday, October 2, 2011, 2-6pm:
Closing ride, led by The City of Angels Ladies’ Bicycling Association (a.k.a. The Whirly Girls) and celebration with afternoon tea at the Armory.

Curator: Irene TsatsosBike It: Portraits of my Bicipandilla by Kelly Marie Martin features black-and-white photographic portraits, taken with a 4×5 camera, of riders in her “bicipandilla,” or bicycle gang, with their bikes. The exhibit ends with a baked-goods-and-bikes bang: a closing ride and brunch with the City of Angels Ladies’ Bicycle Association, a.k.a. the Whirly Girls, on October 2nd, from 10am – 1pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Jen Hofer is a radical cyclist. By this I mean, radically committed. She commutes to downtown LA and most everywhere else by bicycle. She is one of the original Whirly Girls.

She is also a dear friend (and a 3:15 experiment poet!) and one of these days, she promises she will join us in Ventura for an ArtRide.

One day I hope we’ll do a Spoke(n)  ArtRide through Ventura…and another day a writing workshop around Ventura by bike …

In the meantime, calendar these rides!

Our next ArtRide in Ventura is the Gothtober Quidditch Ride–let’s show these Muggles how we roll!

ArtRides & Bikergo Gal Get In The VC Reporter

Michel Cicero interviewed me about the ArtRides, my blogging, my book and more and published her article in the August 25, 2011 VC Reporter. Check out her article and the photo by Gabriel Romero of me in my grandfather’s wine cellar drinking his sherry! (I know–we should have staged a bikergo in there somehow!)

Plus my poetry and art were featured in Friday’s Ventura County Star in an article by Karen Lindell!

Now that I’m famous, I hope you’ll join us for a Full Moon Shuck–ride your bike to the Ventura State Beach Park for a wedding reception (mine!) and oyster shucking under the Full Moon! Moonrise at 630, sunsets 7pm, dark at 8pm! BYOB!

And if you can’t make it on Sunday, please ride your bike to Bank of Books on Main near downtown Ventura to say hi and stay for my poetry reading and book signing Thurs. Sept. 15 7pm.

Ride of Passage: Naked Bike Ride Pub Crawl at Burning Man Weds 8/31 11am

Black Rock City, Nevada, the temporary city of 50-60,000 people that pops up every year for 25 years around Labor Day in the Black Rock Desert, is the perfect place for a Naked Bike Ride.

Fortunately, one is planned for Wednesday, August 31, 2011–Lord Ganesha’s birthday! Meet at 11:00AM at the Man to ride around for a few hours so bring plenty of water and some snacks!

Where did the name “Ride of Passage” come from? The Burning Man Festival theme for this year: “Rites of Passage.”  For more info (and to see photos from last year!: http://www.dragondebris.com/brc_pubcrawl.htm)

I’m going to try to make the ride but there’s a lot of distractions out there! Right now, Wednesday morning my son and I are going on a quest!

If you see me on the playa, ask for a sticker of Ganesh riding a bicycle! If you’re not going to the playa, send me a letter with a SASE and I’ll send you one in the mail:

“Keep on Rolling:” Ride Your Bike to REO Speedwagon Tonight at Ventura County Fair

We’re going to be rolling over to see REO Speedwagon about 7:15pm tonight! Look for us on the beach side of the grandstand about 7:30 when the concert starts! The sounds is fine and the view is ok (on the jumbotron!)
